Rotary Club of Hove Charity Classic Motorcycle Run

Very sadly we have to tell you that we have decided not to continue with our annual Classic Run. Tragically the Run's founder and organiser Mike Peters died recently after a long and brave struggle against cancer. It was a very painful and difficult decision to cancel the event which was so dear to Mike's heart. But, after thirteen very successful and loyally supported runs, we felt that we could not risk letting everyone down by not being able to keep the Run fully up to standard. We would hate to let three hundred riders down in any way.

We would like to express our very grateful thanks to all of those who have taken part over the years. We hope that you will find plenty of other routes to ride out on!

As a club of course we still continue the work of Rotary. We have chosen to support a major project in Sussex to set up a special centre to give vital support to cancer sufferers and their families. We are hoping to raise not only funds for the Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, but also to raise awareness across Sussex that there will be a place where valuable help can be found.

You will find more information about the Centre below and there is a leaflet in PDF which you are welcome to distribute in print format or by email. If you are unable to access a PDF document, then you may view a html version by clicking here.
The Macmillan web site for the Centre is: https://secure.macmillan.org.uk/donateonline/donations.aspx?id=sussex

Once again, we thank you for your tremendous loyalty to our Classic Motorcycle Runs. We wish you enjoyable and safe riding through 2011 and way beyond!

Best wishes

Adrian Ball Chairman of Classic Motorcycle Run Organising Committee

Hove Rotarians campaign for Cancer support centre

"A very old friend Mildred is struggling bravely with cancer. But she and her family need much more than just medical help! Where can they turn to?" Of the 7,000 cases of cancer diagnosed each year in Sussex, many patients and their families get no adequate support or advice. But there is huge help to be had and Rotary has a role to play in getting the message across.

Rotarians in Brighton & Hove have launched a long term county-wide campaign in support of the Sussex Macmillan Cancer Support Centre. The Rotary Club of Hove and Inner Wheel are jointly promoting the project at their public collections, fund-raising events and among their many fellow members across West and East Sussex.

Macmillan Cancer Support is building the Centre in Brighton to serve people throughout Sussex who are affected by cancer. It will provide a holistic support service in a relaxed non-clinical environment. The project is a partnership between Macmillan, Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust and the Sussex Cancer Fund.

Hove Rotary President Ian Collington said: "We were inspired by the dedicated work over long years by the founders of the Sussex Cancer Fund to establish the foundation for the Support Centre and to raise very substantial core-funding to get the project off the ground. We were delighted when Macmillan agreed to bring in their enormous expertise and fund-raising resources to turn this dream into a reality. But we realise how important it is to keep up constant public awareness of just how important a centre like this can be to so many people." The Hove Club is hoping that Rotarians across West and East Sussex will help to promote the Support Centre in the coming months and years.

The Sussex Cancer Fund founder, recently-retired cancer consultant Dr George Deutsch is helping Hove Rotarians to publicise the project. George said: "cancer affects all of our families in one way or another and I know that Rotary involvement with the Support Centre can help a lot to gather vital long-term backing." In only a few months the project has attracted a lot of funding. But £3.7m still needs to be raised.

For Rotary in Sussex the campaign for the Support Centre could also help with membership recruitment. Many members of the public will appreciate and be sympathetic to the Rotary campaign. And many Rotarians and their families have cause to seek help and advice over cancer issues and they too could benefit from the support that will come from the Centre.
